September 2010 had the highest number of imports of Christmas
ornaments in the last 3 years, with 1,259 shipments. Historically, shipments
have spiked in September as the holiday season approaches, but this past
September has shown a dramatic swing with shipments up 51% from September 2009
and 108% from September 2008. The sharp upward turn may be attributed to the
fact that more families are staying at home for the holidays instead of
vacationing, thereby consuming more decorations for the home.
A large majority of these decorations are coming from China,
with 91% of this year’s shipments. Not surprisingly, the west coast of the U.S.
receives the majority of the shipments, with Tacoma, Washington and Long Beach,
California being the top two ports. This year looks to be a very bright holiday
season with the spike of Christmas ornament imports.
