How Zepol’s Trade Data Tools Help Users Find Sales Opportunities

At Zepol, we have a saying, ‘Who doesn’t like new business?’, and I can’t think of a company that would disagree. Many of Zepol’s customers use our trade data tools, TradeIQ and TradeView, as resources for finding new business or discovering where to look for new business.

Some of Zepol’s customer base is comprised of NVOCCs, freight forwarders, and carriers. Transportation service providers use TradeIQ to find lists of importers by company location, trade lanes or carriers used, or products imported. Not only do transportation companies discover new sales leads, but they also keep tabs on their current customers to ensure their competitors are not taking any business away.

Importers and suppliers use TradeIQ to find other importers of the products they import or manufacture. If a company is importing a partial container once a quarter, it may be more cost effective for them to source domestically. With a simple product search, companies are able to find these opportunities.

Zepol’s customers utilize TradeView to learn where to find new sales opportunities. U.S. exporters search for product codes to see which countries are importing the products they sell. Although the importing company names are not available, knowing which countries are actually importing how much product is incredibly valuable.

How Zepol’s Trade Data Tools Help Users Analyze New Marketplaces

Any company that has expanded its product lines knows that there is a great amount of research to be done before any decisions are made. It is critical to understand where a potential new product is coming from and who competitors in the market are, as well as how the product has fared over time. Collecting this information can take a significant amount of time, but Zepol’s tools, TradeIQ and TradeView, can help companies find this vital data in a matter of minutes.

With a simple product search in TradeIQ, users are able to determine a vast amount of information. Not only can you view who else is importing the product you are interested in, but you can find the shippers overseas and which countries the product is imported from. You are able to know the weight and quantity of the imported product in total, or by importer or even for a single shipment. Lastly, you can discover through which U.S. ports the product is entering the country and which shipping line brought the product to the U.S.

Most TradeIQ users also have access to TradeView, and although it houses a different data set, it complements TradeIQ’s data well. There are many options for searching for a product in TradeView, including HTS, NAICS, SITC, End Use, and HITECH codes. For each product code or group of codes, you are able to view the total values, weights, duties, and other charges for imports to the U.S. or exports from the U.S. You can even view values broken down by country or U.S. port and for ocean, air, and land shipments. Having access to export data allows you to discover which markets are currently buying the product you are interested in from the U.S. and where there may be opportunities to sell the product in new countries.

In both tools, users are able to view trends of a product over time, from over the last year to over the last eight years. It is also easy to create graphs to visualize the data for presentations or reports.

How Zepol Prioritizes Enhancements to Our Trade Data Tools

As Zepol’s Product Support Manager, I spend a significant amount of time talking with our customers and prospects. I always appreciate it when users are open about how we can make our tools better. Their feedback helps Zepol prioritize which enhancements will be developed and when.

When a customer or prospect makes a suggestion regarding how we could improve our trade data tools, Zepol’s Sales and Support teams notify the Development team. Every month, we tally the number of users that request each potential enhancement, and this helps us prioritize when to do what. So far this year, Zepol has released eleven major enhancements, and we’re not done for 2010.

It is important to listen to our customers. We want to keep users involved in the development process and create enhancements that will make their jobs easier. From scheduled email reporting to new searches that take filtering in Excel steps out of analyzing the data, our customers are finding it even easier to use TradeIQ and TradeView.
